ÖBB Annual Report 2025

103 Group Management Report Österreichische Bundesbahnen-Holding Aktiengesellschaft Consolidated Financial Statements | Group Management Report 60 Decarbonization targets With its targets, ÖBB is making a contribution toward a climate-neutral economy in Europe in 2050. ÖBB is a group that operates both in Austria and abroad – with parts of the group outside Austria and outside the EU. The focus is on decarbonization in line with European requirements and achieving climate neutrality by 2050. ÖBB's Group target (in Austria and abroad) by 2050 is net zero (-90% GHG reduction compared to the base year 2022) or climate neutrality with residual emissions remaining in the target year being offset. As a contribution to the goal of climate neutrality by 2040 in Austria, priority is being given to reducing ÖBB’’s carbon footprint in Austria – with significant reductions in the fields of mobility and buildings by 2035. GHG reduction in international fields – within and outside the EU – is based on the 2050 climate target. ÖBB supports the Paris Agreement with the goal of climate neutrality by 2050 and is guided by the 1.5- degree target and the current cross-sector reduction path. The cross-sector reduction path is based on the “Pathways to Net-zero” – SBTi Technical Summary with the targets of -42% GHG reduction by 2030 and -90% GHG reduction by 2050 (SBTi: Science Based Targets initiative). A target comparison of the quantitative objectives of the ÖBB Group is carried out annually after querying / evaluating the climate change mitigation measures included in the financial planning. In addition, a Group-wide rebaselining policy is being worked on in order to quickly and fully integrate new fully consolidated subsidiaries into emissions calculations and to no longer apply existing precautionary uplifts due to data uncertainties from the first mandatory reporting at the latest. ESRS E1-1.16.h Energy – Renewable energy Renewable energy is the backbone of ÖBB's strategy to mitigate climate change in Austria. ÖBB’s traction power (power for operating trains) was converted to 100% renewable energies in 2018. In 2019, the 50 Hz three-phase current range for the power supply to buildings and operating plants was also converted. The goals of ÖBB’s energy strategy, which was adopted in June 2023, are to become less dependent on the electricity market and to increasingly cover future energy requirements from self-supply. The target by 2030+ is to increase the degree of self-supply in traction current (including partners) from 60% to 80% by expanding and modernizing the company’s own hydroelectric, solar and wind power plants. At the same time internal energy efficiency (EEff) is to be increased by 25%. Decarbonization levers and key measures to mitigate climate change The following key decarbonization levers and key measures to mitigate climate change have been identified for ÖBB’s three decarbonization areas. The measures to mitigate climate change are reviewed annually, their impacts and degree of implementation are measured, summarized for each decarbonization area, and monitored each year (target tracking).
