ÖBB Annual Report 2025
Group Management Report 134 Österreichische Bundesbahnen-Holding Aktiengesellschaft Consolidated Financial Statements | Group Management Report 91 Double counting was avoided as a continuous comparison was made with the financial procurement volume to ensure that each material inflow was only evaluated and recorded once. Due to the fact that external sources were used to calculate reused or recycled secondary components, products and materials, no further differentiation was made between these terms. ESRS E5-4.AR.25 Resource outflows – Waste The following waste table contains all significant waste streams for the ÖBB Group. In particular, it includes waste from construction projects (renovation, new construction, upgrades), operational activities, municipal areas, and metal waste , which are relevant and specific by sector. Disposal is carried out under individual, framework, or construction contracts. Of particular importance here are the Group's own landfills, which receive waste from major projects such as the Semmering Base Tunnel and the Koralm Railway while optimally reducing transportation distances and emissions. ESRS E5-5.38.a ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG accounts for more than 94% of the waste volume, primarily due to construction and maintenance measures. In 2025, around 3.24 million tons of waste were generated (-8% / py: 3.51), thereof 1.05 million tons (+18% / py: 0.89) were recycled. The majority is accounted for by non-hazardous waste at 3.21 million tons, 96% thereof comes from construction activities. This volume fell by -8% compared to 2024 to 3.08 million tons. The total proportion of hazardous waste is 0.03 million tons (py: 0.03 million tons). The lower quantities of landfilled material are due to natural fluctuations in large infrastructure projects (e.g. tunnel construction). Around 51% of construction waste was disposed of and 98% of landfilled waste was sent to external landfills. Disposal is carried out by ÖBB-Environmental Services & Logistics GmbH and ÖBB-Immobilienmanagement GmbH for municipal waste. In the case of major projects, disposal is regulated by construction contracts. Data is collected annually via internal systems such as the environmental information system, the waste management platform and statutory reporting procedures (e.g. EDM, ALSAG). A precise description of the methodology for data collection is as follows: The ÖBB Group documents the type, quantity, origin and fate of waste in accordance with Section 17 AWG 2002 via internal processes and systems (procedural and work instructions, environmental information system, reports in the electronic data management system Environment Austria, reports in accordance with the Contaminated Sites Remediation Act, etc.). Responsibility under waste legislation ends when the waste is handed over to authorized collectors and treaters who are responsible for its further recovery or disposal. Data collection varies depending on whereabouts: – Company-owned landfills: recording by external landfill supervisors and incoming inspections – Construction contracts: Project managers receive evidence from the contractor, check it and submit it for system entry – Internal service contracts with ÖBB-Environmental Services & Logistics GmbH: data transfer is automated; where this is not possible, the four-eye principle is applied ÖBB-Immobilienmanagement GmbH records the number and size of waste containers and the emptying intervals for each property, unless there are contracts with ÖBB-Environmental Services & Logistics GmbH. The data is entered systematically and checked for plausibility on a random basis by environmental coordinators and waste management officers. Anomalies are forwarded for clarification. There is a uniform Group-wide assignment of waste code numbers to waste streams and processes to ensure correct reporting. All waste-related data is available digitally. The waste listed in the waste table is made up as follows: ESRS E5-5.40 Of the ÖBB Group 1) 2) Chemical conversion and synthesis products Metals Plastics and rubbers Oxides, hydroxides, salt waste Plastics and metals Acids, alkalis, concentrates Solvents, paints, varnishes, adhesives, mastics and resins Textiles Waste with a high biogenic content Water-related Material largely of fossil origin (mineral oil and coal) Plant treatment products and pesticides as well as pharmaceutical products and disinfectants Material of mineral origin (excl. metals) 1) ESRS E5-5.38.b. 2) The waste composition is determined on the basis of the waste code numbers in accordance with the Austrian Waste Records Regulation ( Abfallverzeichnisverordnung , AVVO). Each waste code number is assigned to a material category, which is based on the waste groups of the Waste Records Regulation. | MR91 E. Non-financial statement E.1. General information E.2.
