ÖBB Annual Report 2025
Group Management Report 50 Österreichische Bundesbahnen-Holding Aktiengesellschaft Consolidated Financial Statements | Group Management Report 7 While rail traffic stagnated, motorized private transport increased again slightly based on initial estimates from ASFINAG data. The dynamics of the last two years roughly corresponded to the development in the pre-corona years. 14 The level of motorization also rose slightly for the second time in succession in 2025. 15 Tourism and passenger transport also provided only moderate impetus for the rail sector – air traffic only increased by 2.2%, while the number of overnight stays in Austria grew only modestly by 1.2% in 2025. 16 Transportation on the private railroads has grown. WESTbahn had already expanded its service further towards Germany at the end of 2024 and plans to launch additional services on the Southern line following the opening of the Koralm Railway in the first half of 2026. 17 The development of rail passenger transport was generally very heterogeneous among the major European state railways. After a subdued development in 2024, Deutsche Bahn’s passenger transport was able to grow again in the first half of 2025 by a total of 3.7% in long-distance and local transport. SNCF and SBB also recorded moderate growth. FS and ČD were unable to continue the strong growth trend from 2024 and reported stagnating or falling passenger numbers. 18 Freight traffic ESRS 2.SBM-1.40.a, f. The mode share of rail in Austrian freight transport has changed only slightly compared to the prior year and landed at 27.7% in 2025. After several years of falling modal shares for rail between 2015 and 2020, the rail share has been moving at a similar level with fluctuations since then. The slight increase in transport volumes in road and rail freight transport can be seen as a sign of the slow economic recovery in Austria, following a decline in transport volumes between 2022 and 2024. 19 Development of freight transportation volumes on road and rail in Austria Rail and road freight transport Mode share of rail (Net tkm, change in % compared to prior year) (% of freight transport in net tkm) *preliminary estimates.
