The upward trend in operating volumes on ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG’s railway network continued in 2025. Overall, the increase in train kilometers was 3.4%. In freight transport, operating output increased by 3% to 41.0 million train kilometers. In passenger transport, there was again robust growth in operating output. It amounted to 3.6% in 2025, which means that the operating output was 127.0 million train kilometers. The long-planned Tauern closure until the end of June was a major restriction on the rail infrastructure in 2025. Freight traffic in particular had to put up with major detours due to the closure of this important transalpine link. The important Western line between Vienna and St. Pölten was also partially closed for almost four weeks between May and June, which further restricted capacity on the railway network. There were other line closures lasting weeks or months, including on the Arlberg and on the main line of the Vienna suburban railway between Floridsdorf and Praterstern. The route closures were necessary to carry out essential renovation and maintenance work. The Koralm Railway went into full operation in the fourth quarter of 2025. Freight transport started in November before passenger transport followed with the changeover to the 2026 timetable on December 14. The Koralm Railway reorganizes passenger transport between Vienna and Carinthia and is an important gap closure for freight transport on the EU’s Baltic–Adriatic Corridor. In the west, the situation was dominated by the start of the German general overhaul. In this comprehensive DB InfraGo refurbishment program, the most important corridors are being upgraded, together accounting for over 4,000 km of railway line. 25 As part of these renovations, the corridors in question will be completely closed for several months. While the completion of the entire program was originally planned for 2030, this target has now been extended to 2036, as there were numerous concerns due to the necessary, immense capacity restrictions for the railways. 26 In Hungary, GYSEV took over the operation of over 700 km of the route network from the MAV Group. These routes are located in the west of the country and extend from Lake Balaton to the border with Austria. The Hungarian state railway, MAV, is intending to shift its resources to the east of the country. 27 25 DB. 26 Süddeutsche Zeitung. 27 LOK-Report. | MR9 ÖBB-Holding/Konzernstrategie, Unternehmensentwicklung und -organisation TLP grün (ÖBB-Konzern intern) Passenger transport output (train km in the ÖBB-Infra network) [change in %] 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 Since 2019 6.8% 5.8% 3.2% 4.2% 3.6% 18.2% Freight transport output (train km in the ÖBB-Infr [change in %] 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 Since 2019 5.7% 2.0% -3.6% 0.0% 3.0% -0.4%
