Annual Report 2025 – ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG

ÖBB-Infrastruktur Aktiengesellschaft Group Management Report | Consolidated Financial Statements 70 E1-5 Energy consumption and mix The ÖBB-Infrastruktur Group requires electricity, gas and heat to supply the trains (provision of infrastructure) as well as the buildings and operating facilities (e.g. railway stations, operating sites). The figures for energy requirements in the following table cover the entire ÖBB-Infrastruktur Group. Corresponding strategies (e.g. the further expansion of renewable energies or the phasing out of oil and gas) are explained in more detail in sub-section E1-2 . Energy consumption in MWh Energy sources 2025 2024 Change Change in % Fuel consumption from coal and coal products Smelting coke 0.0 75.6 -75.6 -100% Fuel consumption from crude oil and petroleum products Heating oil 9,344.6 10,435.6 -1,091.0 -10% Fuel (rail and road vehicles, other) 1) 72,830.5 64,730.3 8,100.1 13% Total 82,175.0 75,165.9 7,009.2 9% Fuel consumption from natural gas Natural gas 58,945.3 60,995.4 -2,050.1 -3% Fuel consumption from other fossil sources Liquefied petroleum gas 256.5 318.1 -61.6 -19% Consumption of purchased or received electricity, heat, steam and cooling from fossil sources District heating and cooling 2) 53,571.8 52,098.8 1,472.9 3% Total energy consumption from fossil sources 194,948.6 188,653.8 6,294.7 3% Fuel consumption from renewable sources, including biomass Wood pellets 4,716.8 1,798.3 2,918.5 162% Consumption of electricity, heat, steam and cooling purchased or received from renewable sources Traction current 12,158.7 8,311.4 3,847.4 46% Three-phase current 229,008.6 231,567.9 -2,559.3 -1% Total 241,167.3 239,879.3 1,288.0 1% Consumption of self-generated renewable energy that is not fuel Traction current 3) 12,707.6 15,581.9 -2,874.3 -18% Three-phase current 9,695.1 6,565.9 3,129.2 48% Total 22,402.7 22,147.8 254.9 1% Total energy consumption from renewable sources 268,286.8 263,825.4 4,461.4 2% Total energy consumption 463,235.4 452,479.3 10,756.1 2% Share of fossil sources in total energy consumption [%] 42.1% 41.7% Share of renewable sources in total energy consumption [%] 57.9% 58.3% 1) In the 2025 financial year, the diesel consumption of container forklifts was included in the fuel consumption figures for the first time. This consumption is not included in the previous year’s figure (previous year: 3,534.7 MWh). 2) District heating/cooling consumption comprises fossil and renewable sources. As it is not possible to break this down for the current financial year, the entire energy requirement for district heating/cooling is allocated to fossil sources. 3) In accordance with the energy strategy, the degree of self-sufficiency is defined as the sum of renewable energy generated from own production and partner hydroelectric power plants. Own generation in MWh 2025 2024 Change Change in % Generation of energy from renewable sources *) 1,098,522.0 1,291,742.1 -193,220.0 -15% *) In accordance with the energy strategy, the degree of self-sufficiency is defined as the sum of renewable energy generated from own production and partner hydroelectric power plants. The traction power requirement in the table above includes ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG’s own requirements for providing the infrastructure, e.g. for switch heating. This represents only one part of the total rail electricity supplied (from the company’s own generation facilities or partner power plants) and excludes the rail electricity used by railway undertakings (e.g. ÖBB- Personenverkehr AG) for train traction, as these companies are not part of the consolidation scope of the ÖBB-Infrastruktur Group.
