ÖBB Annual Report 2023

For a reliable future 14 the employees of ÖBB, who work every day to ensure that ÖBB remains the best railway in the EU. In total, ÖBB employs more than 45,000 bus and rail employees as well as approx. 2,000 apprentices in 135 different professions. ÖBB takes on around 3,500 new colleagues every year in order to be the most reliable means of transport for its customers today and in the future. This is partly due to the fact that approx. a fifth of the current workforce will be retiring in the next few years. Young people have new ideas and are generally more familiar with modern technologies. Reliability, however, is also closely linked to expertise, which is something that experienced employees have. It is therefore important that their expertise remains within the company and is passed on to the next generation of ÖBB employees. Conversely, ÖBB also wants to be a reliable employer by offering its employees secure, meaningful and varied jobs with many benefits and opportunities for further training. Punctuality: when every second counts Although ÖBB is still one of the best in Europe with an overall punctuality rate of 95 percent in passenger transport, the detailed values in terms of quality, especially in long-distance transport, neither meet the demands of passengers nor our own. One of the reasons for this is the poor quality of the trains handed over by neighbouring countries. The – very pleasing – increase in passenger numbers also presents ÖBB with challenges when it comes to maintaining stopping times at the stations. Delays are not least the result NEW RAILJETS. In service since April 2024 (top), the double-decker trains arrive in 2026 The five pillars of the ÖBB quality strategy The ongoing boom in the railway sector has presented ÖBB with new challenges. These are now to be actively addressed in the 2024 quality year. ÖBB is focussing on five areas in the process. Reliability More than 45,000 employees work depend- ably every day to ensure that ÖBB remains the best railway in the EU. ÖBB takes on approx. 3,500 new colleagues each year in order to be the most reliable means of transport for its customers for today and tomorrow. Punctuality OBB is focusing on more and modern trains and digitalisation in passenger and freight transport on its way to becoming the most punctual railway in the EU – and is investing in the expansion and modernisation of tracks and infrastructure. Safety and cleanliness ÖBB makes every effort to ensure that passengers reach their destination safely and without harm. That means safety on trains, in traffic and also at our railway stations. Clean trains, buses and train stations increase the feel-good factor. Service ÖBB also lays claim to being the friendliest and most comfortable railway – with a large number of new trains and significantly more seats. Service also means clear and simple customer information – on site and on the smartphone. Climate protection ÖBB remains on course to be the largest provider of climate-friendly mobility and the most sustainable climate protection com- pany in Austria. ÖBB is in this way making an important contribution to achieving climate neutrality in the mobility sector. Quality Year 2024. Effec- tive measures for satisfied customers
