ÖBB Annual Report 2025
111 Group Management Report Österreichische Bundesbahnen-Holding Aktiengesellschaft Consolidated Financial Statements | Group Management Report 68 Targets for climate change adaptation A further specification of the targets and directions for climate change adaptation was carried out as part of the update of the ÖBB sustainability strategy in 2025. Across three strategic directions (resilience of physical assets, monitoring and early warning systems and strategic climate risk prevention), the main target is to ensure safe and reliable rail and bus operations, maximize route availability and minimize disruptions to systems and vehicles. The focus here is on protecting infrastructure and assets. Customers should continue to be offered the best possible mobility services and disruption for passengers and employees should be kept to a minimum. Preventive actions and the use of early warning systems create the basis for effective adaptation and disruption-free operations. Energy consumption and mix ÖBB’s total energy consumption is reported separately for Austria and abroad. In Austria, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG assumes the role of internal energy supplier and has been relying on climate-friendly electricity generation for years, primarily from hydropower. Renewable energies form the foundation of ÖBB’s climate protection strategy. The table below shows the energy consumption and energy mix in 2025 for all fully consolidated companies. It highlights the differences between Austria and other countries and shows progress such as the replacement of diesel and the phasing out of heating oil and fossil gas.
