ÖBB Annual Report 2025
optimal connections between the new route and the regions away from the Western and Southern lines. It is the link that opens up the inner-Alpine region and a regular service available to every- one: residents, tourists, commuters. IR trains are operated as long- distance services, with seat reservations and a snack zone on board, and the fares reflect this long-distance character. At the same time, they fulfill an important regional function. Their stopping patterns are more closely geared to the needs of the regions and in some cases even replace existing local transportation connections. Linking up the Alpine region Five major IR lines connect the inner- Alpine region every one or two hours: IR Ennstal, IR Pyhrn, IR Aichfeld, IR Pinzgau, IR Mur-Drau. Although Tyrol is not located directly on the Koralm Railway, the new Interregio network will bring tangible improvements even here: more comfort, shorter travel times and an attractive alternative to the car – an important contribution to the mobility transition in the region. Thanks to the IR Ennstal line, there will in future be seven direct connec- tions per day and direction between Innsbruck and Graz, running every two hours. Previously there were only two daily connections. The trains run on the familiar route via Ennstal, Bischofs hofen and Zell am See to Wörgl and on to Innsbruck. For passengers from the Kitzbühel district, this means additional direct connections to Innsbruck. The IR Pinzgau, which also runs through the Brixen Valley between Wörgl and Salz- burg every two hours (staggered with the IR Ennstal trains), joins with the S8 (Wörgl – Zell am See) to provide a dense rail network in the region with direct connections to three provincial capitals (Innsbruck, Salzburg and Graz). The Tauern line also boasts signifi- cant changes: for over 100 years, trains ran here every two hours, now they run every hour. Since mid-December, long-distance trains have been running on the route between Graz and Salzburg via Klagenfurt, meaning that there is a direct train between Villach and Salz- burg every hour. New local transportation connections in the south The integrated timetable in Carinthia has turned Spittal-Millstättersee, Villach main station, Klagenfurt main station and St. Paul im Lavanttal into central hubs that seamlessly connect local and long-distance transportation. In Styria, the new S1 (Mürzzuschlag – Bruck/Mur – Spielfeld) will merge the existing S1, S5 and S9 lines. This will create continu- ous, transfer-free connections at hourly intervals on the north-south axis through Vienna St. Pölten Lienz Villach ld (every hour*) al (every 2 hours) (every 2 hours) u (every 2 hours) rau (every hour) ng-distance lines ours between Bruck a. d.
