ÖBB Annual Report 2025

27 Step by step into the future CHALLENGE. One of Compete’s goals is to double the capacity of the rail system in the long term The holding company and the Business Competence Center (BCC) are working on the “ÖBB 4 ÖBB” sub-project to reduce administrative costs, simplify governance processes and align the services of the BCC more closely with the specific requirements of the sub-groups as an internal service provider. For example, different service levels were introduced for central services in order to make the range of services more flexible. At the Technical Services (TS) and Production (PR) companies, the measures are bundled within the “Efficiency and Transparency” program. While TS focuses on increasing the availability of vehicles, PR is primarily concerned with optimizing turnarounds, reducing idle times and ensuring the ability to operate competitively. Another important project involves reducing energy consumption. The workshops held at TS provide a particularly vivid example of the contribution that seemingly small measures can make. In the past, several steps had to be carried out in succession to maintain sliding steps, which are movable elements that assist with boarding. By reorganizing the processes based on employee suggestions, the process was sped up markedly, resulting in savings of EUR 2 million per year. ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG (Infra) is also working intensively on the railroads of tomorrow and has set itself the goal of doubling the capacity of the rail system in the long term. The efforts are concentrated on three priorities: existing infrastructure, quality, and system stability. The 2025 to 2030 framework plan provides for investments of about EUR 20 billion – still a high level of capital expenditure despite measures aimed at budget consolidation. Focus on processes Infra is targeting efficiency and control with its with “INFRA.fit” program. The focus is on optimizing processes, shortening construction times and using resources efficiently in order to minimize the impact on ongoing operations. The aim is to make the best possible use of existing resources, sustainably improve cost efficiency and at the same time ensure a reliable infrastructure for passenger and goods transport.
