ÖBB Annual Report 2025

Group Management Report 64 Österreichische Bundesbahnen-Holding Aktiengesellschaft Consolidated Financial Statements | Group Management Report 21 The modernization of the Kamptal Railroad, Traisental Railroad, Franz Josef Railroad and Mattersburger Railroad was also advanced further during the reporting period. Western line Around a third of all trains run on the western line; accordingly, several capacity expansion projects are interlinked here. In the reporting period, construction work continued to upgrade the western line between Linz and Wels and on the western side of Linz Central Station. Preparation is underway to upgrade the section between Linz Verschiebebahnhof West and Linz Signalbrücke. The Wels terminal is also currently being modernized, and the administration building was commissioned in 2025. The EIA decision for the four-track upgrade of the Western line between Köstendorf and Salzburg was issued in 2025. Southern line The biggest highlight in the reporting year was the historic commissioning of the Koralm Railway between Graz and Klagenfurt after 27 years of construction. It comprises 130 km of new track, 50 kilometers of tunnels, over 100 bridges and 23 modern stations. As an important feeder line, the first electrified section of the Styrian Western Railway between Wettmannstätten and Wies-Eibiswald (with a connection to the new Weststeiermark station on the Koralm Railway) also entered into operation in 2025. A total of 133 km of line and station tracks will be spanned by an electric overhead line. Work continued on the technical tunnel equipment for the Semmering Base Tunnel. With the commissioning of the Semmering Base Tunnel, a journey time of less than two hours between Vienna and Graz will be possible in future. Station modernizations The following stations were completed during the reporting period: – Train stations Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein (Salzburg) – Garsten station (Upper Austria) – Haus station (Styria) – Fritzens-Wattens station (Tyrol) – Arnoldstein station (Carinthia) – Kittsee station (Burgenland) – Maria Anzbach station (Lower Austria) – Maishofen-Saalbach stop (Salzburg) – Seekirchen Stadt stop (Salzburg) – Rosenburg and Kamegg stops on the on the Kamptal Railway (Lower Austria) – Temporary station building at Bregenz station (Vorarlberg) – Bludenz station forecourts (Vorarlberg) Tauern axis The Salzburg – Villach Tauern route is the most important Austrian connection across the Alps alongside the Brenner route. The Tauern route between Böckstein in Salzburg and Mallnitz in Carinthia will be completely closed for extensive modernization work on the Tauern Tunnel until summer 2025. This will result large-scale diversions for passenger and freight traffic. Arlberg route Due to the renovation of the Arlberg road tunnel, no major work could be carried out on the railroad line in the past two years. These were subsequently carried out in fall 2025 during a one-month closure. The project managers initiated an EIA governance process for the double-track upgrade of the “Klosterbogen” before Bludenz. Brenner route The planning and preliminary work on the northern approach to the Brenner Base Tunnel as part of the upgrade of the Brenner railroad axis is moving forward systematically. Planning is continuing for the project section from the national border near Kufstein to Schaftenau. In the Schaftenau – Radfeld junction section, the Angath exploratory tunnel was completed in 2025. ÖBB will create additional rail capacity on the Brenner northern approach in 2026 on the new Kundl / Radfeld – Baumkirchen section through the upgrade and commissioning of the Vomp overtaking station, block densification and the expansion of ETCS. | MR21
