ÖBB Annual Report 2023

For a reliable future 16 ÖBB is stepping up internal measures and working closely with the police as part of the “Together safely” programme to provide the best possible protection for its passengers and employees. Training and information in the area of occupa- tional health and safety increase employees’ safety awareness and alertness. Technical and digital solutions are also used to increase security. For example, the ETCS train control system, which requires no signalling at all on the track, is increasingly being installed on new lines. Service: new quality hardware and software ÖBB is constantly investing in its rolling stock in order to offer its passengers and customers the best possible service. Approx. 330 new trains and more than 100,000 modern seats will be added to the railway network over the next few years. The different requirements of travellers in long-distance, local and regional transport (space for luggage, equipment and comfort of the seats) are taken into consideration. Service quality in freight transport primarily consists of making it easier for companies to access the rail system. The Rail Cargo Group focuses on multimodal transport, which combines the sustainability of rail freight transport with the flexibility of truck transport over the first and last mile, thus also reaching customers without access to a private siding. Digitalisation also plays a key role in driving forward the sustainable transport transition and enables services that make rail freight transport even easier and more convenient for as many customers as possible. Technical services: maintaining ongoing quality ÖBB-Technische Services (ÖBB-Train Tech) makes an important contribution to the functioning of the hardware. It is the tech- nical support centre for ÖBB vehicles and is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the entire fleet. The approximately 4,000 employees at ÖBB-Train Tech’s 25 locations throughout Austria are also responsible for their technical development. The major challenge is to fulfil the increasing demand with as few restrictions as possible for ongoing operations. To this end, the so-called standstill maintenance, which takes place during breaks in the vehicle timetable, is to be further expand- ed. In this way, the number of standby vehicles is also reduced. In addition, for new vehicle fleets, such as the new generation of Railjets and Nightjets or the new double-decker trains, the maintenance work is divided into modules so that it can be completed in a maintenance window of at least eight hours. “Condition-based maintenance”, in which ÖBB-Train In future, artificial intelligence will support ÖBB customers with exactly the information they need, when they need it. NEW TRAVEL COMFORT. The interior design of the new Railjet and the new Nightjet is even better tailored to travellers’ requirements
