ÖBB Annual Report 2023

Group Management Report 58 Österreichische Bundesbahnen-Holding Aktiengesellschaft Consolidated Financial Statements | Group Management Report 13 Passenger transport market environment Growth in passenger transport continued in 2023. In 2023, mobility in Austria was not affected by any measures to combat the pandemic, with the exception of a temporary mask requirement on public transport in Vienna in the winter of 2022 / 2023. Pandemic-related restrictions on cross-border transport have also been lifted. Transport performance has grown accordingly on all modes of transport. The strongest growth was in domestic rail passenger transport, at just under 12%. This exceeded the pre-corona level by approx. 9%. At the same time, however, motorised private transport has also increased significantly and reached a new record level. Nevertheless, rail transport’s modal share of 13% is likely to return to the 2019 level following the coronavirus-related shifts towards private transport in 2020 and 2021. 23 Development of passenger transport performance on the rail and roads in Austria Rail passenger traffic (annual change in %) Motorised private traffic (annual change in %) * preliminary estimate. This is likely to significantly exceed the record figure for passenger transport capacity in 2022 with a further increase of almost 12% in 2023. Initial calculations indicate that local transport also recorded growth of approx. 11%. This is however still just under 5% below the pre-COVID-19 level. It is difficult to identify the direct causes of the current rail boom, especially in long-distance transport. A number of framework conditions are, however, certainly having a favourable effect on current developments. The number of climate ticket users has increased further to approx. 272 thousand most recently 24 Tourism has also returned to pre-COVID-19 levels, particularly due to the return of foreign guests. There were, however, no significant shifts in the proportion of domestic and international overnight stays or individual countries of origin that would indicate a lasting change in travel behaviour compared to before the pandemic. Nevertheless, the number of travellers reached record levels, especially in the summer months. 25 The railway companies have responded to this development by continuously expanding their services. Not only ÖBB, but also competitors in the open access segment have significantly increased the number of trains and connections in 2023. 23 European Commission, Statistics Austria, UIC, ÖBB, ASFINAG, own calculations. 24 Orf.at. 25 WIFO. | MR13 ÖBB-Holding/Strategie und Unternehmensentwicklung (intern) TLP grün (ÖBB-Konzern intern) 21.08.24 Pkw-Verkehr [Änderung in %] 3,2% 0,7% 2018 2019 2020 2021* 2022* -17,6% 10,9% 11,3% 4,3% 1,1% 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022* -44,4% 13,7% 56,4% Bahn-Personenverkehr [Änderung in %] 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023* since 2019 1.1% -44.4% 13.7% 54.1% 11.9% 8.9% 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023* since 2019 -2.8% -10.4% 6.1% 10.7% 3.8% 9.2% Nicht verwendet p ÖBB-Holding/Strategie u d Unternehmensentwicklung (int rn) TLP grün (ÖBB-Konzern intern) 21.08.24 Pkw-Verkehr [Änderung in %] 3,2% 0,7% 2018 2019 2020 2021* 2022* -17,6% 10,9% 11,3% 4,3% 1,1% 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022* -44,4% 13,7% 56,4% Bahn-Personenverkehr [Änderung in %] 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023* since 2019 1.1% -44.4% 13.7% 54.1% 11.9% 8.9% 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023* since 2019 -2.8% -10.4% 6.1% 10.7% 3.8% 9.2% Nicht verwendet
