ÖBB Annual Report 2023
59 Group Management Report Österreichische Bundesbahnen-Holding Aktiengesellschaft Consolidated Financial Statements | Group Management Report 14 The recovery in rail passenger transport also continued in Austria’s immediate vicinity, as a comparison of some state railways in neighbouring countries shows. DB’s transport performance within Germany in the first half of 2023 was 13.1% higher than in the same period of the previous year. The Deutschlandticket introduced on 01.05.2023 has already had a positive impact here. At DB Regio, transport performance – adjusted for the effects of the one-off 9 Euro ticket – was 30% higher than in the same period of the previous year. Dampening effects such as construction sites and EVG warning strikes were clearly unable to depress the trend. SBB even recorded an increase of over 22% in passenger kilometres in the first half of the year. Although the number of general season tickets sold is still well below the 2019 level, a new record was set for special, long-distance and group travel. The first half of the year was equally positive for ČD’s passenger transport, although growth was slightly lower at 5%. 26 The upturn in passenger numbers in the aviation sector also continues unabated. The number of passengers arriving at or departing from Austrian airports increased by 29.5% compared to the previous year. Compared to approx. 32.0 million travellers in the record year 2019, however, this still represents a decrease of approx. 5.0%. The trend continues to point upwards, however, as evidenced by the orders received by the aircraft industry. 27 Other key indicators for passenger transport in Austria Flight passengers (excluding transit passengers – change in %) Degree of motorisation (number of passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants) * preliminary estimate. The degree of motorisation as the number of cars per inhabitant in 2023 has again fallen slightly. This is due to the disproportionate population growth of the last two years, which is mainly due to the influx from abroad. The number of passenger cars in Austria also increased slightly in 2023, though with growth of 1.0%. The increase in new registrations was as high as approx. 11.0%. The backlog of orders due to the supply chain bottlenecks of previous years have a major impact here.
