Step by step into the future 10 On to the next landmark project SEMMERING BASE TUNNEL. Tunnel excavation work on the Semmering Base Tunnel was completed at the end of November 2024. Since summer 2025, work on the tunnel outfitting has been in full swing: tracks, lines, technical equipment and 1,000 km of cables will be laid and installed by 2028. After intensive testing and training runs, the first trains will then roll through the Semmering Base Tunnel between Gloggnitz and Mürz- zuschlag at the end of 2029. This will create a fast, con- venient and reliable connection to the south of Austria, further strengthening the dynamic that began with the opening of the Koralm Railway.
